Children's Spanish Program
The Children’s Spanish Program at ½ûÂþÌìÌà is offered by Spanish Education majors and their adviser, who together volunteer their time as teachers in the program. The classes are for children in second through seventh grade who wish to learn to communicate meaningfully in Spanish via fun, engaging classes.
Class participants include both native speakers and foreign language learners of Spanish. Native Spanish-speaking families are actively recruited, and can trade hours of service to the program in exchange for tuition. The program serves as a research venue for the Spanish Education adviser, and the tuition money paid to the program helps fund professional development opportunities for the Spanish Education majors, such as:
- attendance at language teaching conferences,
- engagement in curriculum development and academic research projects,
- and connecting with and learning from in-service foreign language teachers.
In this way, the Children’s Spanish Program is a service-learning project, in which all of the participants both learn from and teach one another.
