Women and Gender Studies
The Women and Gender Studies minor is designed for students who want to understand the world about them using concepts such as gender, race/ethnicity, and class.听 It is also designed for students who are passionate about social change.听 Passion and practicality work together. 听This interdisciplinary minor draws on courses from WGS and departments such as Psychology, Social Work, and English.听 Students can easily find classes that intrigue them and also count toward Core and major/minor requirements.听 WGS is a flexible minor that complements any major.
Importance of Women and Gender Studies
Our lives are shaped by 鈥渃ategories of difference鈥: gender, race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, religion.听 Students in WGS use these categories to reflect on their own identities, others鈥 experiences, and the impact of social forces.听 They study the struggles of women and other groups to achieve social justice and equality--in the past, in the present, and across the globe.听 WGS courses inspire students鈥 scholarship, prepare them for careers in diverse workplaces, and develop their capacity for social action.听 听
Women and Gender Studies Courses
The Women and Gender Studies Minor requires two foundational courses, WGS 105 Sex and Gender in Society, and a WGS capstone course.听 Students also chose three courses from the WGS Humanities and Social Sciences lists.听 These courses include Marriage and Family, Psychology of Diversity, International Social Development, Multicultural Communication, Women Writers, North Africa in Modern Times, and Ethnicity, Gender, and Religion.
Careers for Women and Gender Studies Minors
WGS minors go on to work in a wide variety of fields and are also well prepared for graduate and professional programs.听 The interdisciplinary nature of WGS gives students knowledge of our diverse society and tools for identifying problems and bringing about change.听 The skills emphasized in WGS鈥攃ritical thinking, research, oral and written communication, and teamwork鈥攁re vital for any career path.听 Possible careers include:
