Information Systems

Integration, Maintenance, and Management of Technology

½ûÂþÌìÌÃ's Information Systems major is focused on the integration and maintenance of software, hardware, data management, and cybersecurity applied to client and business technology solutions. You will learn about the latest techniques for gathering, storing, and analyzing data, as well as how to make the most of hardware resources when developing client solutions. You'll also gain insight into industry best practices for safeguarding data from cyber threats and gain proficiency in technology and team management for business applications.

Classes for an Information Systems major include Computer Architecture and Database Systems, Web Development and Cloud Computing, Ethical Hacking and Digital Forensics.

Information Systems Concentrations

Information Systems students are encouraged to take upper-level coursework in a specific area of interest by specializing in one of our concentrations, which include: Cybersecurity, Data Engineering, and Management.

Cybersecurity

With a concentration in Cybersecurity, you will learn to detect threats and implement systems to secure devices, databases, webs, and networks against cybersecurity threats. Advanced courses in network and computer security alongside Criminology courses enable you to identify criminal behavior while monitoring, containing and remediating threats. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national median annual wage estimate for information security analysts is $102,600.

Data Engineering

With a concentration in Data Engineering, you will learn to implement and maintain the systems and architectures to collect, store, and process large volumes of data while ensuring data quality. With advanced courses such as From Data Mining to Deep Learning, Big Data, Machine Learning, and Data Visualization, you will also get training in AI and data analysis. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national median annual wage estimate for database administrators is $99,870.

Management

With a concentration in Management, you will take additional courses in Management and Organizational Behavior, Legal Environment of Business, Accounting, and Communications. In your career, you will be prepared to lead a team to plan and implement upgrades of software and hardware, negotiate licenses, services, and purchases, and prioritize technology investments for the business. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national median annual wage estimate for computer and information systems managers is $164,070.

What Can I Do With a Degree in Information Systems?

The Information Systems major prepares students for jobs in highly valued professions such as systems managers, project managers, system analysts, cybersecurity professionals, database engineers and a whole host of others. After years of graduating top-ranking students, the Department of Computer Science has a nearly 100% job placement rate for our Information Systems students immediately after graduation. Many of our students also continue to graduate-level study in information management or security.

Hands-on Training in Real-world Scenarios

By designing databases from scratch, building backends for web applications, and setting up local and wide area networks, you will gain valuable experience in a variety of technical domains. In addition, you will also engage in simulated scenarios where you attempt to hack into your classmates' systems while they do the same to yours, preparing you to anticipate and respond to cyber threats. Whether you're dealing with true-to-life situations or hypotheticals, this program equips you with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate any challenges that may arise in your future career.

Information Systems Minor

Our Information Systems minor is designed to provide students with an overview of the information systems program. Students will take courses such as Computer Science I and II, Introduction to Information Systems, and Database Systems. Students can also choose two electives from all Computer Science courses including Software Engineering, Computer Security, and Application Development. Having a background in information systems gives students tools that they can use in their careers, such as building databases to manage information, as well as implementing those systems within hardware solutions and securing them in the cloud.
