Outside Scholarships & Aid

Managing Outside Scholarships and Additional Aid

After receiving an official financial aid offer from ½ûÂþÌìÌÃ, a student may also receive an outside scholarship or grant. At ½ûÂþÌìÌÃ, it is policy that these external funds are first applied to unmet financial need, which includes need-based self-help aid. If the total amount of outside scholarships, or grants exceeds the unmet need, the College will reduce its institutional need-based gift aid (such as the Trustee Scholarship) on a dollar-for-dollar basis. This policy enables students to benefit from outside scholarships while allowing the College to maintain its program parameters. If a student has not received any need-based gift aid, this policy does not apply. If outside aid is not renewed in future years and the student’s financial profile remains unchanged, need-based gift aid will revert to its original level.

Merit-based scholarships (Excelsior, Presidential, Founders, and Dean’s), as well as the Achievement Award, are not reduced by outside scholarships. However, they may be reduced if the student receives tuition benefits or if their total gift aid exceeds the cost of Tuition, Food, and Housing. Outside scholarships and loans may affect a student’s overall financial aid package. Federal law requires the Office of Financial Aid to be informed in writing of any outside awards, including loans. If a student receives a scholarship specifically for postsecondary enrollment, it must be included in their financial aid package. A copy of the letter from the awarding organization is preferred.

Important Note: If a student’s aid package includes assistance from multiple programs with differing overpayment regulations or requirements, the College must apply the most stringent or restrictive requirements.
